Christmas Sugar Cookies

Updated: Dec 10, 2021

The countdown until Christmas is running and making sugar cookies is the best to pass time and shorten the wait! Grab a bunch of friends, your family or get artsy by yourself and time travel back to childhood :) Get funky with the cookie cutters and enjoy!

Ingredients (for 2-3 people to have hours of fun)

  • 250g Flour

  • 75g Sugar

  • 1 Egg

  • 125g Butter

  • Pinch of Salt

For Decoration:

  • Juice of 1/2 Lemon

  • Icing Sugar

  • Chocolate (for baking)

  • Food Colouring

  • Edible decoration

Method:

  • Knead the flour, sugar, butter, egg and salt into a round ball of dough and set to cool in the fridge for about 30 minutes.

  • Preheat your oven to 175°C.

  • On a clean kitchen surface, sprinkle some flour and roll out the cookie dough about 5mm thick. Use the cookie cutters to cut out shapes or freestyle using knives, forks, whatever you want really. Place the cookies on a baking try lined with baking paper and bake for about 12 minutes (until slightly golden). Once the cookies are baked, it's very important to let them cool off entirely before starting to decorate!

  • For the icing, mix the icing sugar and lemon juice in a ratio of about 3:1. You kind of have to try around a little with this: You want a thick icing that won't run off your cookie, so if it is too runny add icing sugar, if it is too solid add lemon juice. Split the icing into three small bowls and put different food colourings in each. Optionally, also melt some chocolate in a hot water bath for an alternative to the lemon icing. Start decorating and have fun!

For storage: Leave the decorated cookies to fully dry off. Then, you can layer them in an airtight box with baking sheets between each layer of cookies to prevent sticking.
